Anders Trentemøller’s debut album was, frankly, epic. So, too, were the ensuing remixes; as is his recently released second full length, ‘Into the Great Wide Yonder.’ It’s no surprise, then, that suitably heavyweight artists Kollektiv Turmstrasse (aka Christian Hilscher and Nico Plagemann) and Pantha du Prince (known to mother as Hendrik Weber) are the first to get a go at reinterpreting the Dane’s latest high grade offerings.

The single in question is the plump, kick drum lead swagger of ‘…Even Though You’re With Another Girl’ which is transformed from a slow, mournful wander along a storm swept beach into a darker, slightly paranoid jog by KT and a more colourful skip by PdP. Both tracks are instantly redolent of their maker yet retain true to Trentemoller’s original, and both bring a certain class and freshness to electronic music that you don’t often find atop the Beatport charts, for example.

For Kollektiv Turmstrasse’s part they maintain the dumpy core but go much deeper around it, plumping the track out into a marching, grainy and propulsive wedge of edgy underground house which is as instant as it is engaging. As the track moves, on there’s a real sense of rising urgency – as if someone is following you – and eerie atmospheres percolate until a midpoint when the original’s echoing, distant female vocal comes in. Once they fade out, you’re left suspended in frosty, late night air until the raw bass kicks boot you up the ass once again and push you through the final of the track’s eight minutes.

The Pantha du Prince flip is built on a much less rigid, much more undulating beat structure than the first, and is characterised by the original’s shimmering Calypso style xylophones: xylophones which twinkle like a pretty, starry night and fill your mind with bursts of sonic colour in exactly the same way as does most of Weber’s recent work. “It’s just Pantha du Prince retreading old ground, then” you might say. “He’s run out of new ideas” you add. Well, maybe, but if your old ideas still sounded as refreshing as this, you wouldn’t be in a hurry to change anything.
